WEBSITE OF THE DAY - Awkward Family Photos now with pets

Double the awkwardness
WEBSITE OF THE DAY - Awkward Family Photos now with pets. Online, WebsiteOfTheDay, Websites, Awkward Family Photos 0

Awkwardness is something everyone will have to deal with at some point in their lives; the trouble, is knowing how to handle it. Some might suggest shying away from the difficult situation, though this is a missed opportunity. Embrace it for all it’s worth because you never know when another awkward or embarrassing situation will come around again, and it might be an experience lost.

And awkwardness abounds in the photos uploaded onto our website of the day - Awkward Family Photos. Bemused looks, dubious attire and odd scenarios are all the order of the day in this gallery of snaps, though we’re sure any one of us could probably add to the content if we looked through enough old albums.

As well as this, it also happens to be a bit of a double feature as the long-running site has now added an awkward family pets section, which is a little lighter on content, but holds a few gems within.

Take a look through, a pray you don’t see yourself gracing the pages.

Samsung NX100 render breaks cover. Cameras, Digital cameras, hybrid cameras, Samsung, Samsung NX100, Photokina2010, 0

A render, claiming to be an official shot of the yet to be announced Samsung NX100 has turned up on DPReview.com.

Posted by a forum user claiming to have inside knowledge of the new camera, a render, which matches a previously leaked shot on YouTube has turned up for all to enjoy.

While it’s debateable as to whether the render is the work of Samsung or the work of a carried away fan, Samsung has already confirmed that it will be announcing a new camera at the start of Photokina later this month.

Until then all we’ve got to go on is that the NX100 will be a 14.6 megapixel HD video capable (720p) camera with an ISO range of 100 to 6400.

Size wise it supposedly measures (WxHxD) 120.5 ? 71 ? 34.5 mm and weights 282 grams.?

There will be a fixed 3-inch 920k AMOLED screen with the option of the an electronic viewfinder that can optionally be attached via the hotshoe.

There is no built-in flash if the images are to be believed.

WEBSITE OF THE DAY - Arcade Aid

How many games can you guess?
WEBSITE OF THE DAY - Arcade Aid. Gaming, Online, WebsiteOfTheDay, Websites 0

If you have several hours to kill and have the desire to show off you arcade gaming knowledge to all and sundry then you might want to give Arcade Aid’s Tron Legacy viral game a go.

It’s been around for a few months now so we thought it about time to cover it on Website of the Day. It’s basic in the extreme and a bit like an online version of Catch Phrase, but with computer titles and no Roy Walker.

Navigate through the picture tagging as many of the hidden video game titles as you can (there are 56 in all), when you’ve got a video game in your sites enter your answer; if right the location will turn green on the minimap, and you’re onto the next one.

You can play without joining, but if you want the kudos you’ll want to set up a login.

Apple Ping gets 1m signups, other 159m iTunes users not bothered

3m downloads of new iTunes 10
Apple Ping gets 1m signups, other 159m iTunes users not bothered. Software, iTunes, Apple, Ping, 0

Apple has said that 3m people have downloaded its latest version of iTunes 10, however only a third have signed up to its new Ping social service within the music software.

Over 1m iTunes users have signed up for it’s new Ping social music service within iTunes just 48 hours after it was launched on Wednesday but the take up looks even worse when you take into account the other 159m users of the iTunes yet to have a go.

“One-third of the people who have downloaded iTunes 10 have joined Ping,“ said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services in a statement. “As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing.“

However while the 1m users sounds impressive it’s just a fraction of the overall total iTunes users that Apple confirmed on Wednesday was 160 million.

“iTunes is the number one music community in the world, with over 160 million iTunes users in 23 countries, and now we’re adding social networking with Ping,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO at the company’s Special event.

Ping lets you follow your favourite artists such as Lady Gaga, Coldplay, U2, Jack Johnson, Yo-Yo Ma and more, to see what they’re up to, check out photos and videos they’ve posted, see their tour dates and read comments about other artists and albums they’re listening to say Apple.

In related news, Steve Jobs has already left the service. Although present in the demo of Ping on Wednesday searching for the CEO brings back no results.

APP OF THE DAY: Antigen (Android)

Arkanoid meets Tetris meets the human body
APP OF THE DAY: Antigen (Android)

Ever wondered what it was like to be an antibody? No, we don’t suppose anyone has but if you’ve ever felt like trying to visualise the fight your little microscopic guys were up against to keep the threat of infection at bay, then we reckon it probably looks something like this.

?

Antigen

Format
Android

Price
Free

Where
Android Market

?

Antigen is a where Arkanoid meets Tetris inside someone’s body cavity. You are a little square-shaped antibody with four different surfaces which house four different lock and key mechanisms for vanquishing any nasty antigens that pop up in the blood stream. Each baddie requires a different side and your job as the player is to rotate your little antibody so that it’s facing the correct way and the steer it into the path of the antigen which it can then lock onto and destroy. Got it?

Naturally, you have a steady stream of enemies that begin to come thicker and faster as you reach heavy infection zones and at the end of each of the five levels, you’ll even have a boss virus to contend with while still trying to stop its minions getting to the other side. And, if you think that sounds too tough for you, fear not, there are power ups to help you out on the way.

You can choose from all sorts of levels of difficulty and from story or survival mode but it’s the free price tag on this one that makes it well worth a download. It’s very playable, there’s a nice level of humour and it’ll keep you interested for a couple of weeks before you decide not to upgrade to the paid version.

New BBC iPlayer going live next week

No, that’s not a Gordon the Gopher reference
New BBC iPlayer going live next week. home cinema, online, BBC iplayer, Video on demand, 0

You may remember back in May, Pocket-lint told you all about the BBC’s new iPlayer platform that was being launched in beta form. You may have even tried out the beta version for yourself (8-10 per cent of viewers did apparently).

And now, the beta stage has nearly come to its end, and we’ve been informed by the Beeb that the stable version of the revamped service will be going live early next week -? meaning a new looking BBC iPlayer for everyone logging on to the service.

As well as an updated design and UI, the updated iPlayer also has a few key new features on board such as more personalisation options, including personal categories, saved settings with a BBC ID and a “For You” section, and, most excitingly, social network integration with Twitter and Facebook.

James Hewines, the BBC iPlayer product lead explains:

“While social networks are now a well established phenomenon, socially enhanced TV and radio aren’t. It’s early days yet, but we’re pretty sure that this is going to be an important facility in the near future.

“Together, we hope these features represent a crucial evolutionary step in the enjoyment of online TV and radio. Until now, the focus has been on getting programmes to users packaged in a coherent experience - this next step is about allowing users to interact with the service and each other around our programmes.”

If you’re confused as to how you’re going to get on with the new iPlayer service, then take a look at the YouTube series of videos that the BBC has put together, starring Rufus Hound, who runs through all of the changes, and throws the odd joke in too for good measure.

Samsung Galaxy Tab vs Toshiba Folio 100

Android tablet royal rumble
Samsung Galaxy Tab vs Toshiba Folio 100

As predicted, it’s tablet city at IFA2010. Samsung swung in with the Android running Samsung Galaxy Tab and that was one thing for the iPad to think about. Now, with Toshiba launching the Toshiba Folio 100, well, there’s some decisions tablet PC buyers out there are going to be have to be making and making soon.

It’s easy enough if you’re an Apple fanboy. You just pick the one with the OS to match the rest of your gear. However, given that both the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Toshiba Folio 100 both sport Google’s open mobile OS, which should the Android-ites be going for? The answer lies within these words…

Form

Winner: SamTab
91 x 120 x 12mm, 380g

Loser: Folio
281 x 181 x 14mm, 760g

You’re not exactly going to be fitting either of these tablets in your pocket. So, to some degree, the dimensions are a bit of a red herring. That said, it’s worth knowing that the SamTab is thinner and will feel a lot less weighty both in your hand an in your travel bag. While you get the bonus of a bigger screen on the Folio as a counterpoint, all the same, it is a little on the chunky side.

Display

Winner: SamTab
7in, 1024 x 600, multitouch

Loser: Folio
10.1in, 1024 x 600, multitouch

Even though the Folio has a bigger screen, it’s well worth nothing that it has exactly the same resolution but spread over a large area. In short, the pixel density is far better on the SamTab and you’re going to see much crisper pictures. Of course, the payback is that you might want to hold Samsung’s device a little closer to your eyes to get that same big screen effect as you do on the Toshiba Folio 100. The trouble is that you don’t get that choice to make the pixels denser with the Toshiba.

Engine Room

Winner: Folio
Nvidia Tegra 2

Loser: SamTab
Samsung Hummingbird

Both tablets run with the ever popular system on a chip solutions at their core and what the Hummingbird offers is almost identical to the iPad with an ARM Cortex A8 1.0GHz CPU and PowerVR SGX540 GPU combo. Toshiba has the edge though even over what is already an impressive engine on the SamTab. There’s a dual Core 1GHz ARM 9 offering heavy mobile power as well as solid multi-operational processing plus there’s some hardcore Nvidia GPU action going on in there as well. For smoother video playback and better games performance, it has to be the Folio by a mile.

Software

Tie: SamTab
Android 2.2 (Froyo) + TouchWiz

Tie: Folio
Android 2.2 (Froyo)

Horses for courses in this department. Both devices are as up to date with Android as you can get right now and will happily cope with Android 3.0 and better as soon as they arrive. The only major difference is that the SamTab comes with Samsung’s TouchWiz custom UI on top. Now, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Toshiba didn’t come out with some Brandroid of its own. If that did happen, one would expect it to be a less accomplished work than TouchWiz - simply because Toshiba has had less practice at it. However, for the time being, we’ll consider this one a draw.

NB: Both of these devices are marketed as coming with all sorts of bits of software such as Fring, Swype, Evernote and others already installed. Do remember that 99 per cent of these you can go and get yourself on the Android Market. That said, the Folio is stated to come with Documents to Go which is a paid for app, if the full version.

Imaging

Winner: SamTab
1.3MP front facing, 3MP rear facing

Loser: Folio
1.3MP front facing

Both manufacturers have added the all important webcam, clearly recognising that video calling is one of the killer apps of this gadget form. However, it’s only Samsung that has adorned its creation with a 3-megapixel camera plus LED flash to play with on the other side. You might not be buying a tablet to be able to shoot snaps or capture video but it’s one of those things you’ll get annoyed with when start looking to download augmented reality apps.

Storage

Winner: SamTab
16/32GB + SD

Loser: Folio
16GB + SD

Neither of these devices offer as much storage on board as the iPad but, with an upper end model available from Samsung, there’s a lot more room to keep all your HD videos, photos and whatever else one keeps on a tablet these days. Neither are terrible here given that you can buy big, fat SD cards in this day and age.

Price

SamTab
TBC

Folio
?329

For the minute, there’s no 3G version of the Folio but we know that the Wi-Fi only will cost ?329 when it arrives in October. Whether the mobile broadband edition is more or less costly than the SamTab remains to be seen. Keep ‘em peeled on Pocket-lint and we’ll let you know as soon as the decision’s been made.

Battery

Winner: SamTab
7 hours video

Loser: Folio
Less

Toshiba’s power stats for the Folio are perfectly respectable. The headline is that you’ll get 7 hours of play but only when split something like 65 per cent web browsing, 10 per cent video and 25 per cent standby. Whether it’s having to power a larger screen or not, that achievement has rather been blown out the water by Samsung who claim you can watch video for 7 hours straight on the Galaxy Tab. Significant when you’re talking about entertaining yourself on a long haul flight.

Connectivity

Tie: SamTab
Wi/3G/BT3.0/HDMI/DLNA

Tie: Folio
Wi/3G/BT2.1/HDMI/DLNA/USB

Althouth there are differences, we’re not going to be petty enough here to say that one device comes out over the other. The Galaxy Tab has Bluetooth 3.0 as well as the n-Wi-Fi, 3G and DLNA credentials but there’s no USB port. Everything has to be done either by the 30-pin dock or removable SD cards.

On the other hand, strictly speaking there’s isn’t actually a 3G version of the Folio available just now but it does have USB 2.0 which might save a little bother when connecting peripheral devices.

Conclusions

The Toshiba Folio has only picked up one winner’s medal in the this match up but that doesn’t make it a bad device. It’s answered some very big questions with some very big answers and, on spec, anyone buying one is unlikely to be disappointed. If Tosh has tuned everything nicely - think a decent touchscreen interface - then you’ll get some seriously impressive grunt out of this larger tablet and that might pay dividends for those looking to run some more serious games.

All the same, we’re going with the Samsung Galaxy Tab as the better of the two. It’s a good size with a great screen, astounding battery life, plenty of guts, two cameras, just about all the connectivity you could ask for and it also happens to be a phone. Eat that, iPad.

Google pay-per-view service in works

Could beef up Google TV offering
Google pay-per-view service in works. Home Cinema, PVRs, Google TV, Google, Sony 0

Google could be about to enter the pay-per-view market via YouTube according to reports in the FT.

The newspaper says Google, who could go live with the service as early as before the end of the year, is already in negotiations with Hollywood’s leading movie studios.

“Google has been pitching to the studios on the international appeal of a streaming, on-demand movie service pegged to the world’s most popular search engine and YouTube, according to several people with knowledge of the situation,” reports the FT.

“Google and YouTube are a global phenomenon with a hell of a lot of eyeballs – more than any cable or satellite service,” said one executive with knowledge of the plans. “They’ve talked about how many people they could steer to this . . . it’s a huge number.”

However what’s more likely, is that the company will use the service to help bolster the appeal of its?Google TV?offering launching soon and use it to take on Apple’s Apple TV offering, Hulu and Netflix as the pay-per-view market intensifies.

Sony?has already announced, as part of its partnership deal with Google, that it will have its first internet TV out in time for Christmas in the US. According to the company, Sony will be the world’s first TV to incorporate the “Google TV” platform later this year.

Through an?easy-to-use?interface, consumers will be able to search and access content from their TVs and across the Internet - a rich internet experience on consumers’ TVs says the company.

“Sony Internet TV” is scheduled to first launch in the US the autumn of 2010 with the lineup featuring both a standalone TV model and set top box-type unit incorporating a Blu-ray disc drive.

In the UK Sony already offers Lovefilm via its BRAVIA televisions.
