HTC Spark: leaked photos show up

How many Window Phone 7 phones are HTC planning
HTC Spark: leaked photos show up. Phones, Windows Phone 7, HTC, HTC Spark, Microsoft, 0

With the Windows Phone 7 launch just days away, handsets are turning up all over the place.?The latest is the HTC Spark in Egypt.

It’s yet another HTC handset (how many is HTC going to launch?), and follows hot on the heels of other HTC Windows Phone 7 leaks like the HTC Mondrian.

“Today I met a friend who has a Windows 7 HTC Spark phone for testing purposes. Since I found nothing on it online (even GSM Arena & XDA), I took some snapshots,” writes the Fishawy a senior member of the XDA-Developers forums.?

According to further posts by the forum user it sports a 1GHz processor and a 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen display as well as HTC Hub.

“HTC hub has nothing extraordinary .. Calculator, Converter, Flashlight, Phone Enhancer, and some other stuff.”

The news comes as the Wall Street Journal?confirms what here at Pocket-lint we’ve know for some time - that Microsoft will be launching Windows Phone 7 on 11 October in New York with AT&T, LG, Samsung and of course HTC.

Jaguar C-X75 electric concept car loves Tron

Gas-electric hybrid two-seat sports car concept turns up at Paris Motor Show
Jaguar C-X75 electric concept car loves Tron. Car and GPS, Cars, Concepts, Jaguar<br />

Jaguar has unveiled a new concept car at the Paris Motor show to celebrate it’s 75th birthday.

But rather than just be any old car, this is a gas-electric hybrid two-seat sports car concept is, say Jaguar, capable of a top speed of 205 miles per hour, and getting you from a to b up to 68 miles away on a single charge.

Looking like something out of Tron thanks to a good smattering of blue lights on the dash and in the engine housing the C-X75 “explores the outer limits of both performance and sustainability,” according to the press release.

The C-X75’s 580kW (778bhp) propulsion system combines powerful 145kW (195bhp) electric motors at each wheel.

At the centre of the car sits two micro gas-turbines. These can either generate 140kW (188bhp) to charge the batteries and extend the range of the car to a remarkable 900km (560 miles) – enough to drive from London to Berlin on a single tank – or when in Track mode provide supplementary power directly to the electric motors.

The four electric motors provide torque-vectored, all-wheel drive traction and grip, essential in a car that produces 580kW (778bhp) and 1600Nm (1180lb ft) of torque.

The car’s interior is equally impressive, with the driver and passenger seated ahead of a sealed airbox that houses the micro gas-turbines. The seats are fixed to the bulkhead as in a single-seater racing car, and air to feed the turbines passes smoothly around them via channels in the structure of the body. With the seats anchored in place, the steering wheel, controls, main binnacle and pedal box all adjust towards the driver.

Dramatic theatre lighting is activated as the driver approaches the car; phosphor blue electro-luminescent wire lights illuminate the perimeter of the cabin and the turbines. When the car is started, additional blue LED lighting gently floods the door and bulkhead speaker cavities, highlighting the car’s lightweight construction say Jaguar.

Bespoke interior materials include cream and grey leathers, polished and vapor-blasted aluminium and a soft-feel textured neoprene.

A new interface for the driver has also been created for the C-X75 using high-resolution TFT screens.

Building on Jaguar’s 10-year expertise in touchscreen technology, the Jaguar Co-Pilot display in the center console supports the driver in extracting the full potential of the C-X75 by seamlessly managing information.?

No word on whether or not you’ll be able to buy it anytime soon.

More confirmation that QNX coming to BlackBerry smartphones

Three RIM execs says its happening, but official line isn’t so clear
More confirmation that QNX coming to BlackBerry smartphones. Phones, Tablets, QNX, BlackBerry, RIM, BlackBerry PlayBook, 0

RIM has confirmed to Pocket-lint that QNX and the BlackBerry OS will eventually become a single symbiotic entity in the future.

Although refusing to be drawn on the specifics of when that future might be, Alan Panezic, vice president, platform product management told Pocket-lint that such a move would be a “logical conclusion”.

The executive’s comments line-up with a number of other BlackBerry bigwigs that are also hinting and confirming what most people expect to be the eventual outcome.

“There’s no reason to rule it out,” Alan Brenner, senior vice president, BlackBerry Platform, told Bloomberg in an interview at the conference.

The news agency is reporting that RIM’s senior management has signalled that such a move might make sense, though the company hasn’t announced plans.

Meanwhile website IntoMobile cites an unnamed RIM VP has confirmed to them that the QNX operating system?would ‘be finding its way to smartphones in the long run, and ultimately replace the existing BlackBerry OS” adding that the VP suggested that we should expect BlackBerry 7 as a likely be a stepping stone before a full switch.

Talking more to Research In Motion spokespeople at the company’s DEVCON event in San Francisco, it’s clear the company hasn’t formulated a definitive answer on whether QNX and BB OS will be merged.

As to a definitive answer as to will it / won’t it, RIM is currently staying quiet.

Apple TV: What’s inside?

New Apple gadget torn to pieces
Apple TV: What's inside? . Home Cinema, Apple, Apple TV, iFixit 0

Come on, we know your gadget loving self isn’t happy with just seeing the outside of your gadgets, and thankfully iFixit’s latest tear down lets us see inside the new Apple TV.

So what’s inside the new mini set top box from Apple? Turns out a Samsung NAND flash chip complete with 8 GB of flash storage, while the A4 processor has 256 MB of integrated RAM, the same as the iPad.

“Apple’s current HD movies generally run less than 4 GB, but Apple needs around 512MB for the OS and likely wants to leave room for video quality improvements over time,” says the site.

“This is the easiest to service new Apple product we’ve seen recently. We awarded it a coveted Repairability Score of 8 / 10. The ease of repairing this device, integrated high-efficiency power supply, low 6-watt power consumption, and efficient stand-by mode lead us to believe this may be the most eco-friendly set-top box of all time.”

But before you get excited about the idea of filling it with apps (yep we know that that feature isn’t available… yet) it’s more likely that the flash memory is used to cache your favourite shows while they’re being streamed.

For conspiracy theorists out there iFixit says that “the solder pads near the side of the logic board look to be a *perfect* match for a dock connector! This Apple TV seems to be a couple of features shy of a full-on computer.”

If that’s not enough to get you wagging your tails, iFixit also believes a space next to the memory would just perfect for more storage suggesting big memory packing versions in the future.

Gmail conversations threading turns off

All your emails now get their own billing
Gmail conversations threading turns off . Online, Google, Gmail, 0

Gmail conversations, the email service’s ability to streamline your inbox based on who is emailing you is rather like Marmite; you either love it or you hate it.

On Wednesday that love hate relationship finally got an outcome - you can turn it off.

“The way Gmail organizes mail into?conversations?is like cilantro. You either love it — and, like me, enjoy the nice citrusy, herbal finish it gives to everything from salsa to curry — or you hate it,” says Wiltse Carpenter, Technical Lead on the Gmail blog.

While Carpenter admits that he loves the feature, he acknowledges that others don’t:

“It turns out not everyone feels the same way,” he concedes.

The answer?

You can now get Gmail served up sans conversation view.

Go to the main?Settings page, look for the “Conversation View” section, select the option to turn it off, and save changes.

“If you change your mind, you can always go back.”

If the new feature isn’t is with you already, it should be with you in a couple of days.

But no more details than that
A mock up of what Windows Phone 7 could took like

Sony Ericsson is the latest manufacturer to join the growing number of operators that are launching handsets for the new Microsoft operating system.

We play with the new operating system update for your current BlackBerry

We’ve already had confirmation that Research in Motion is bringing it’s new BlackBerry OS 6 to other handsets aside from the BlackBerry Torch, but now we’ve managed to grab some hands on time with the new OS on the Pearl 3G, the Curve 3G and the Bold.

The official line is that BlackBerry OS 6 will be coming to any GSM handset that the company offers, around the world, that sports 256MB of memory or above. For CDMA, that’s Verizon, phones, it’s any handset that has 512MB of RAM or above.

We had a brief play with the new OS 6 on the Curve 3G, the Pearl 3G, and the Bold and although they weren’t the final build, BlackBerry users will be pleased with what is coming.

Scrolling through the menus is quick, the social feed element is fun, and there isn’t anything that has been toned down here, although you don’t obviously get touchscreen support.

RIM say that the new OS will be available in the next couple of weeks, but will depend on your operator as to when you’ll get it after they’ve done the usual round of testing.

PHOTOS: Bose VisionWave TV hands-on

Playtime with an extraordinary screen
Bose VisionWave

When?Marc Jourlait, vice president and general manager of Bose Europe, announced that his company was about to reveal “what we believe is a game-changing new concept in home entertainment”, it started tongues wagging and side bets to be placed among the UK’s press.

All manner of of devices, content delivery services and weird and wonderful innovations were guessed at, including the concept of a Bose-branded Scrabble-playing monkey. However, even the unveiling of a word game-fancying simian would’ve been less surprising than the idea that Bose was moving into the TV market.

It’s rare to render a room of tech journalists speechless, but it did. Bose just doesn’t make TVs.

But, after playing with the 46-inch VisionWave and its separate media box, it actually makes for a good fit in the American audio specialist’s range.

To start with, the VisionWave should not be considered a television as such. Not only does it lack a tuner, so is technically just a screen, it sports a standard CCFL-backlit LCD panel, rather than the LED-lit equivalent so popular with major telly manufacturers these days.

Instead, Bose’s innovative device should be seen as an all-in-one sound system that just so happens to have a screen.?Therefore, it’s uniqueness, and major selling point, comes from the speaker array crammed into the belly of the beast. It is not a rival for the Panasonics or Samsungs out there. And while the price point of ?6,000 may put it on a par with Bang & Olufsen and Loewe, neither brand has anything quite like it.

From the side, it’s no looker. Indeed, we’ve seen a smaller footprint in the dirt outside a clown’s caravan. But that’s because of the six subwoofer drivers, “M” WaveGuide, seven mid-range drivers, and Phase Guide high frequency speaker. There’s some serious air being pushed out of this monster, and a thin waistline just couldn’t accomodate it.

That will immediately put some people off. The craze for superslim screens continues apace, and this is not designed for them. It’s most likely to appeal to those who want robust audio performance, but don’t have the space for a 5.1 system. Certainly, it is capable of a soundstage - thanks to bouncing off tables, backwalls, sidewalls and anywhere else within reach - that’s beefier than licking the side of a cow.

It’s definitely at its best when the volume control is raked up a notch, and that, in itself, features another innovation for the company: Bose Click Pad.

Along with the VisionWave, the manufacturer has taken another of Marc Jourlait’s adages to heart: “Make home cinema and content delivery in the home simpler,” he says. “Ease of set up and ease of operation; these are what consumers have asked for”. And the Click Pad certainly does that.

At present, the stripped down remote control only works with the VisionWave. It has simple buttons for volume, channel changing, on/off, that sort of thing. However, there’s also a touch sensitive panel just above centre which brings up an onscreen menu when you lightly brush it.

Depending where you put your finger or thumb, the?corresponding?section of the menu lights up. Click the centre button and you’ve performed that action. It’s staggeringly simple to use, yet we found that every possible thing we’d want immediate access to was there for us within seconds. A lot of research has gone into the Click Pad, and it shows.

We also noticed other areas of the screen to be simplified beyond what normal manufacturers would offer. To start with, the set comes with the Bose’s proprietary Adaptiq auto calibration system. Wall-mount or put it on a stand, switch in on and the software will come up with the most suitable audio configuration for your surrounds, so that you don’t have to. Also, there seems to only be two picture modes, for light and dark room ambience. That’s it.

There’s no denying that the VisionWave, with its overly simple feature-set, Unify control console, iPod dock, and Click Pad remote control, is an esoteric product, and its ?6,000 price tag will marginalise adoption, but Bose should, at the very least, be applauded for attempting something new.

We still reckon the next launch will be a lemur with its own Boggle set, though.

APP OF THE DAY: Tiger Woods PGA Tour (iPhone)

Get in the Ryder Cup mood
APP OF THE DAY: Tiger Woods PGA Tour (iPhone). apps, app of the day, iphone apps, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, 0

The Ryder Cup kicks off on Friday and just because the players have been banned from Twitter it doesn’t mean that the fans shouldn’t enjoy a bit of mobile fun.

And whilst it’s all well and good tweeting about the event whilst you watch, you’ll still find that there will be times when you’ll get bored - probably when the inevitable rain breaks come.

And you’ll need a nifty little game to take your mind off of things.

And, with that in mind, we bring you our latest App of The Day…..

Tiger Woods PGA Tour

Format
iPhone, iPod touch
Price
?0.59 (for limited time)
Where
iTunes

People who have played any of the Tiger Woods games via its various console releases will know exactly what to expect from this game. Basically you can take on (or become) Tiger, as well as other PGA golfers such as Annika Sorenstam, Vijay Singh, Natalie Gulbis and Retief Goosen across the PGA calendar.

It might not have the detail of its seventh generation cousins, but fans of the title won’t be too disappointed. Familiar features are all still on board, including player personalisation, quick play modes, the full PGA tour and commentary from the pros - Sam Torrance and Kelly Tilghman.

Gameplay is very neat. It’s much more fluid than Let’s Golf 2 for example, courtesy of the swipe swing control method - although the cartoon graphics of LG2 probably work slightly better than the attempted rich detail of Tiger Woods.

There are seven different courses to play, and you can even buy additional ones via the PGA Shop within the app.

You can also play with your buddies via a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, if you get bored of beating Tiger and the gang.

The game has some really nice touches as well. There is a music button for easy access to your iTunes library, which is great when the commentators begin to wind you up, and the game also has an auto-save function which lets you resume from the shot you left it at.

For 59p it’s an absolute steal, but move fast before EA slaps it up to around ?3.49 again. Even then though, it is still a bargain for what is a very strong golf sim title.

More FIFA 11 iPhone screenshots released

FIFA 11 is all set for its iPhone outing next month, and to whet your appetites EA has released a couple more screenshots.

One of the shots shows action from the football sim, giving a taster from a MLS match between David Beckham’s LA Galaxy and Thierry Henry’s New York Red Bulls, with the shoot, pass and through-ball options all on show.

The next shot is one of the pre-match set up screen which shows that the iPhone version doesn’t scrimp on the finer details, as is the strong point of the FIFA series. You can almost smell the aftershave on Becks’ Galaxy jersey.

The game features 500 officially licensed teams and 50 real-life stadia. It should hit the App Store in October.
