NEWS: Why do you need Flash on your iPad? Adobe says porn

iPorn a no go says Photoshop creator
Why do you need Flash on your iPad? Adobe says porn. Hardware, Internet tablets, Apple tablet, iPad, Apple iPad, Adobe, Adobe Flash Player 0

Adobe?has pulled out the big guns in its fight to get Flash on the iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad; Porn.

In a simple post featuring the image above, Adobe says: “Millions of websites use Flash. Get used to the blue logos”

A fairly simple statement in itself, however one of the images of the 10 sites shown shows the iPad viewing a website that just happens to be “World Famous Bang Bros in HD”.

Adobe has also thrown a bone?to those who are disappointed about Apple’s failure to get Flash support into the iPad, offering developers the ability to package their content into apps, instead, but that won’t help them with the web browser.

Looks like Adobe is hoping to get its “money shot” by appealing to Apple staff’s more seedy nature. ?

NEWS: ESSENTIALS: Software to improve your life - Dropbox

Ideas for the digital desktop
ESSENTIALS: Software to improve your life - Dropbox

As our digital footprints grow, so do our collections of files and the number of different access terminals we use to organise, edit and store them. If you’ve lost track of where the most up to date copy of your CV is or the final edit of your holiday snap collection or the tax return you’ve been working on and, if you’re sick and tired transferring them via USB stick or e-mailing them to yourself, then if you haven’t already discovered it, we have the perfect solution for you.

Name
Dropbox

Type
File transfer & cloud storage system

Developer
Dropbox Inc

Platform
Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone

Price
Free

In a nutshell, Dropbox synchs, shares and stores your files and folders for you. There are other services that offer similar ideas but what makes this one different is how wonderfully simple and convenient it is. It’s primarily a web based application with a desktop twist but we’ll get to that in a second. First thing’s, first. Go and sign up for it. Go on. It’s free. Pick a user name and password and bingo you’ve got yourself 2GB of free cloud storage.

If you don’t think that’ll be enough for you, then you can pay $9.99 per month (or $99 per year) for the Pro 50 account and the 50GB of space you get with it. One step up and you’ve got the Pro 100 for 100GB and that comes in at a similar $19.99 per month (or $199 per year). Incidentally, you can also send invitations for your friends to join the service and, for each one that does, you receive a bonus 250MB but you can only do that four times with the basic account to offer a free maximum of 3GB.

Now that you’ve got your filing system in the cloud, you can send people links to certain folders, giving them permission to view and download the documents, images an videos etc inside. That saves hassle on two fronts. First of all, it means that you don’t have to spend time a) choosing, b) finding, c) attaching and d) mailing the specific files to your friends and family and, secondly, it means you don’t have to worry about whether your recipient’s mail service or their will can handle the huge files you’re trying to send. Of course, if you’d rather not send links at all, then you can simply put things in your “public” folder which is open for all to view. All very nice but that’s not the clever part.

The real joy of Dropbox is the desktop side of this service. You can download the application to as many of your computers as you like - your work one, your desktop at home, your laptop and even your iPhone as well if you happen to have one (Android likely to follow soon). What that gives you is a folder on your desktop called “Dropbox”. This folder acts like a magic pocket. Whatever you put into it on one of your machines, you can pull out of another. This is all possible because the moment you drag and drop an item into it, it automatically uploads it to a “Dropbox” folder in your cloud space.

Once in the cloud, it’s in a dedicated folder which will automatically synch the files you put inside it with every other copy of those files on all your machines. So, you can be writing a novel, finish chapters 1,2 and 3 on your laptop computer and then stick them in the “Dropbox” folder on your machine. You can then access your novel with the first three chapters all done and as you left them on your iPhone, write chapter 4 and then save it. The edited document will now appear up to date in the cloud, on both your laptop and your iPhone and on any other machine you happen to have that has the Dropbox application on it. It’s a little abstract to get your head around but start using it and you’ll get a better picture.

The good news is that Dropbox uses a technique known as delta encoding which means that each of your machines won’t have to download and upload an entire copy of the file you synch each time you make a change to it. Handy if it happens to be an enormous video project you’re working on. It effectively splits the files into chunks and only synchs any of the parts that have been modified rather than the entire thing. So that saves you some time and maybe some ISP money too.

Just in case you make some changes to a file that you’re not happy with, the system also keeps a 30-day version history giving you full access to older copies of each file for one month. You can extend this to an unlimited period if you opt for one of the premium packages. And, on top of all that, all your data is encrypted for security.

So that’s Dropbox, that’s how it works, now go and try it for yourself. Tjat said, it is just one of many different storage and synching services but if there’s a better one out there you’d like to recommend, then do let us know in the comments below. Happy filing.

NEWS: Tokyo building gets massive QR code

Offers discounts to passers-by
Tokyo building gets massive QR code. Software, QR codes 0

A Tokyo building has been turned into a massive QR code, offering shoppers the opportunity to use their mobiles to snap a picture and be taken to a website that offers discounts on the shops in the local area.

There’s also another experience planned - an augmented reality application that can display shop info, interactive adverts allow you to make reservations and even displayTweets from people within the building.

Two companies created the work - Teradadesign and Qosmo. The latter company said: “Our goal is to provide an incentive to visit the space and a virtual connection to space without necessarily being present”.

NEWS: Which UK operators will offer micro SIMs for the Apple iPad?

We put the data question to the telcos
Which UK operators will offer micro SIMs for the Apple iPad?

That the iPad is to offer its 3G connectivity via a “micro SIM” card isn’t some necessary hardware requirement - the device is plenty big enough to boast a full-size SIM - it’s Apple’s way of throwing a bone to mobile phone operators after announcing the iPad, unlike the iPhone, would be offered “unlocked”.

Unlocked it maybe, but the micro SIM option means consumers aren’t going to be able to get their iPad online with any old SIM and cheap data deal, but will be forced to opt for whatever micro SIM contracts operators offer. So, who in the UK will be providing such packages for the iPad? We asked the operators to find out.

As far as the current iPhone operators go, O2 was the most forthcoming with information telling Pocket-lint: “The Apple iPad is an exciting device but we have nothing to announce at this time” as well as “there are currently no devices on the O2 portfolio that require micro-SIMs and as such they are not available from O2. We are ready to support devices which require micro-SIMs when these devices become available” while Vodafone came in with a “no comment” and we’ve yet to hear back from Orange who have put the question to its Group press office.

3 said as far as the micro SIMs go “at the moment we don’t range it and don’t have plans to either”, Tesco told us there are “no plans yet to launch SIM for the iPad” and T-Mobile and Virgin Media have not responded to our enquiries at all.

The Carphone Warehouse CEO Andrew Harrison said in a wider statement about the iPad launch: “We are really excited about all the Slate/Tablet products currently in the pipeline and look forward to providing our customers with additional options for connecting and consuming content in the future”.

Reports on the net from both “sources” and the manufacturing company that makes the small scale SIMs, suggest that Orange and O2 are UK operators almost certainly due to offer micro SIMs and data packages, but it seems it will be some time before anything is confirmed - we will keep you posted.

NEWS: Apple iPad funnies, parodies and spoofs in video and pics

ROFL
Apple iPad parodies in video and pics

If you thought the Apple fanboys were busy with Photoshop before the iPad launch, it’s nothing compared to what the detractors have been up to since.

It seems the choice of name from Apple has opened up a wealth of comedic possibilities, as has the fact that to some the iPad is seen as a super-sized iPod touch.

For a bit of fun we’ve started off a selection of pictures from various sites - and one video - parodying the new tablet. Have we missed one you’ve seen? Stick a link in the comments and if we like it, we’ll add it into the gallery.

Thanks to Phil for reminding us of the original “iPad” spoof video from waay back.

NEWS: HTC Magic finally gets Sense UI

ROM update brings interface to handset
HTC Magic finally gets Sense UI

We might still be waiting for an updated version of Android on the HTC Hero, but the company has delivered on at least one of its promises - bringing the Sense UI to the HTC Magic, by means of a ROM update.

HTC says: “This ROM upgrade for your HTC Magic will let you experience?HTC Sense?on your phone.?HTC Sense?lets you create a phone just right for you. You can customize your experience to be any way you like. Discover intuitive experiences that make everything you do on your phone effortless and delightful”.

So if you’re not feeling like your phone is effortless and delightful enough, then go install it. A word of caution first, though - be sure that everything from the device is backed up before you start, because the update wipes it clean.

Oh, and it looks like it won’t work for phones labelled “with Google”, either, thanks to licensing restrictions. That includes the Vodafone edition in the UK. If you wanna test to see whether it’ll work or not, just put your serial number into the form on the download page and it’ll tell you yes or no.
