NEWS: Sources: Apple January event confirmed

Inside source says announcement is happening
Sources: Apple January event confirmed. Hardware, Apple, Internet tablets, Apple tablet, iSlate, rumours, iTablet, iPad, 0

Foxnews.com is reporting that a “source” inside?Apple?has confirmed to the publication that Apple will hold a “big” event in January, in what is widely expected to be the official launch of the Apple Tablet, currently rumoured to be called the iSlate.

“While nothing official has been handed down from the notoriously tight-lipped company, my source took the?Financial Times?report one step further by saying this event will focus on the mobility space, meaning we’ll see something related to the iPhone/Touch product line,” reports Clayton Morris in the article.

Rumours for the much talked about Apple Tablet have been growing steadily over the couple of months with many experts believing 2010 will be the year Apple finally announces a device.

Trademark listings, domain name registrations and other details are currently suggesting the tablet device that is expected to look and work like a giant iPhone will be called the iSlate.

We will keep you posted.

NEWS: Google Nexus One pricing revealed

Leaked online purchase page details unlocked and contract costs
Google Nexus One pricing revealed

News from the States appears to confirm rumours that T-Mobile is to be the US operator that will offer the Google Nexus One Android phone.

Although reports strongly suggest that the device will also be available to consumers as an unlocked, SIM-free handset, it seems T-Mobile (the first operator to offer an Android phone) will also be offering the mobile on contract.

To buy the unlocked handset a recently leaked purchase page sets the price at $529.99 (roughly ?330) which will see consumers getting the device itself, a phone case, a wall charger, a USB cable and free US shipping.

The same page prices a Nexus One desktop docking station at $39.99 and a Nexus One car docking station, for navigation and hands-free use, at $49.99. Customisation via engraving is also said to be an option.

The leaked page also reveals a T-Mobile plan option, with a T-Mobile “Even More Individual 500 Plan” due to cost a not-to-be-sniffed-at $79.99 a month for a two-year tie-in, seeing the handset sold for $179.99 - in addition to the contract.

We don’t have to wait long to see whether or not supposedly leaked page is the real deal - Google is almost certainly due to reveal all on 5 January at an Android-themed press conference.

We will keep you posted.?

NEWS: Nokia escalates Apple lawsuit by filing an International Trade Commission complaint

“Apple infringes Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, and computers”
Nokia escalates Apple lawsuit by filing a complaint to the International Trade Commission

Nokia has taken its current battle against Apple a legal step further with the news it has filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission (the ITC), suggesting its current lawsuit against Apple is not looking like reaching a settlement any time soon.

In a statement, Nokia says the complaint to the ITC alleges “that Apple infringes Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, and computers”.

The seven Nokia patents in the complaint are said to relate to “Nokia’s pioneering innovations that are now being used by Apple to create key features in its products in the area of user interface, as well as camera, antenna and power management technologies”.

“These patented technologies are important to Nokia’s success as they allow better user experience, lower manufacturing costs, smaller size and longer battery life for Nokia products”, says Nokia.

“Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in small electronic devices”, said Paul Melin, general manager, patent licensing at Nokia.

“This action is about protecting the results of such pioneering development.? While our litigation in Delaware is about Apple’s attempt to free-ride on the back of Nokia investment in wireless standards, the ITC case filed today is about Apple’s practice of building its business on Nokia’s proprietary innovation”.

Nokia’s original suit against Apple was filed in October, naming ten patents that Apple allegedly refused to cough up for licence agreements over.

In response, in December Apple filed a countersuit against Nokia claiming that in fact, it’s Nokia doing the infringing - to the tune of 13 Apple patents.

NEWS: 2009: A year in review, September

3D at IFA, many mobiles, and someone’s Gran sold on eBay
2009: A year in review, September

On to September, which started with a bang at the IFA tradeshow in Berlin. Not one of those flat, comic-book style bangs, either - a massive 3-dimensional bang as just about every manufacturer in the world unveiled a 3D product.

There was 3D home cinema - Sony’s Bravia HDTV, Philips Cinema 3DTV, Panasonic’s 103-inch plasma 3D display and 3D Blu-ray on the horizon. There was gaming - with talk of Sony making all its PS3 games 3D. There was photography - with Fujifilm rolling out the W1 3D Camera. And Navigon joined the party too, with its 8410 3D satnav.

But beyond that lineup, and a self-cleaning toilet seat from Korea, there was little to talk about, with most commentators branding IFA 2009, like CES in January, a “theory year” with plenty of concepts and vague promises for the future rather than the storm of new products seen in previous years.

What was on fire in September, however, was the phone market. Orange and T-Mobile announced that they were going to merge - though the fruits of that won’t be seen for a few years. The Palm Pre was announced to be coming to O2, Vodafone got the Tattoo and also launched its “360″ suite of services.

There was a massive pile of smartphones announced, most of which were from LG. The LG Pop, LG GW300 QWERTY, LG “Chocolate” BL40 (with little brother BL20 upgraded), LG GW520 poked their heads above the parapet, along with the Motorola DEXT, Palm Pixi, and the open-source, Maemo-equipped, Nokia N900.

Laptops were busy too, with the first few Windows 7 models being announced before the Microsoft OS’s release in October. The Acer Ferrari One, Toshiba Qosimo 500 BD, Medion Touch X9613, HP Envy 15 and 13 and Packard Bell OneTwo appeared, as well as some netbooks from Samsung and nettops from Asus.

In the gaming world, the Tokyo Games Show heralded a February release for Bioshock 2, along with the news that EA, Ubisoft, Konami and others had signed up to Microsoft’s impressive-looking Natal motion-sensing control system and were developing games for the platform.

Apple launched the 5th generation nano, puzzlingly equipped with a video camera but not a stills camera, along with a 3rd generation of the iPod touch - beefing up its processor and internal storage capabilities.

Google marked the 11th year since launch with a special homepage graphic that spelt “Google” with two Ls, instead of the normal one. The company took the month off to celebrate, reining in its normally-frenetic release schedule to only announce one new product - Google Sidewiki.

Right at the end of the month, Microsoft brought its free antivirus software, Security Essentials, out from beta, allowing anyone to download it. At the time, many predicted the death of other free solutions like Avast and AVG, but that hasn’t yet materialised, with many still opting to stick with their third-party antivirus software.

But Microsoft didn’t mind, as its awful Windows 7 party advert took the Web by storm and its Bing rebrand of Live Search hit 10% market share in the USA.?Facebook also hit a massive 300 million users, larger than any social network before it.

Spotify, following a year of rapid growth, returned to invite-only status in the UK - a move that was accompanied by much questioning of its business model, and whether it was really possible to make money off ad-supported free music.

Lastly, a smirk was raised over a 10-year-old’s attempts to sell her Gran on eBay. The bemused relative attracted 27 bids in excess of ?2000 before the retailer yanked the listing which described the lady as “rare and annoying and moaning a lot”, but “cuddly”.

NEWS: 2009: A year in review, August

Imaging explosion, a massive mistake from Microsoft and Nessie is found!
2009: A year in review, August

The only people who weren’t on holiday in August seem to be those in the camera industry. It was a bumper August for imaging with the superb Canon 7D breaking cover, while the company’s compact range exploded to life with the launch of the fantastic G11 and PowerShot S90, the latter of which was to eventually make it into our nominees for best camera of the year.

Old adversary Nikon, had some pretty unique ideas of its own with world’s first projector-come-camera, the Nikon S1000pj. At the same time Sony made further inroads towards some serious competition with the Alpha 500, 550 and 850 DSLRs, and Olympus came out with the E6000 big snapper too. Even Leica launched not one but two whole products with the M9 digital rangefinder and the super expensive, super resolution Leica S2.

Photography was also playful in August with the Sony Party Shot camera shooting module, the dual-screened Samsung ST5500, the full HD Samsung HMX-U10 pocket camcorder, whilst webcams went HD with the arrival of the update to the Microsoft Lifecam range. Kodak also showed that the old dog was happy to learn some new tricks as it set a competition to crowd source the name for its next product. The Pocket Rocket was appreciated but ultimately not accepted.

Elsewhere, the tech world was deathly quiet. Just three phones launched - the Android-running Samsung Galaxy and two INQ phones - the Mini and the Chat. The Dell Mini 3i smartphone appeared in images from Asia and we heard that RIM was the fastest growing company in the world. For mobile phone news though, that lot was the equivalent of tumbleweed.

Even Apple was relatively schtum. The TomTom app landed, as did Snow Leopard but we’d known they were coming for ages. The confirmation of the 9 September iPod launch was no massive surprise and most people were too busy putting that 2 with the Beatles Rock Band 2 together and making 5 to really notice that, for the first time, Steve Jobs made a comment acknowledging the existence of an Apple tablet.

Rivals Microsoft managed to take centre stage instead with one small but very significant piece of photo editing, as a black man was photo-shopped out of an advert to be aired in Eastern Europe. Cue furore and an entire battery farm of egg on face.

Mercifully, the world of AV was looking more progressive. Channel 4 announced it would screen a week of 3D in the autumn while the 3D event of the year itself, Avatar, launched a trailer for us all to enjoy. Samsung talked up TV technology with the promise of 400Hz panels, LG confirmed its 15-inch OLED and Toshiba finally bit the bullet and joined the Blu-ray Association. And, for those looking for something a little more simple, YouTube hosted an entire week of streaming Ghostbusters to all and sundry.

The only other hardware of significance was the arrival of the Sony Reader Touch and Pocket Editions, and the launch of the MSI laptop range which included the X600 slimline.

Otherwise, World of Warcraft launched its own magazine after the news of the Cataclysm update to come in the future - shock, horror, Twitter went down - a terrible thing given that London was named the Twitter capitol of the world, Star Trek launched its own cologne, cash machines went Cockney, a squirrel was the hot new meme, the Loch Ness Monster was spotted on Google Earth and a man was caught trying to sell an oven door dressed up as a TV. You’d never have guessed it was the silly season, would you?

Being a teenager has always been tough. But these days it seems like our teenagers can’t win.

They’re misunderstood, unsupported, at the mercy of a patchy education system and in many cases they are openly feared by some sectors of society.

That’s no way to go through your formative years.

Barnardo’s started this project to give teenagers a voice. And they have spoken, eloquently and for the whole world to hear.

It’s time for the rest of us to listen

I’m starting to feel a bit old.

A friend sent me a really funny email the other day. At least, she said it was really funny. I didn’t understand most of it, but then I’m ten years older than she is.

That’s why I’ve now bookmarked Urban Dictionary and signed up to their daily email.

This way I can keep up with things and keep the illusion of youth going for a few more years.
