Canon’s latest PowerShot model is the?Canon PowerShot SX210 IS?and sports a 14-megapixel sensor and 14x optical zoom

Not to be confused with the?IXUS 210, the new model beats the IXUS 210 in optical zoom stats, but doesn’t feature a touchscreen display.

Regardless of model numbers, we’ve already managed to grab a hands-on with the new compact camera announced just hours ago that will come in an array of gold, silver, purple and black colours.

Like the new Canon IXUS 210, Canon has focused on bringing an array of interestin enhancements above and beyond just making sure you can just point and shoot.

Picture modes of worth are the “miniature” mode that is a basic tilt shift effect - making everything look like your shooting a model image - and a fisheye lens option that you can adjust the strength of (low, medium and high).

Of course, for those that actually just want to take pictures you’ll get a wink mode and smile mode that means the PowerShot 210 IS won’t snap until it see the right action.

Video comes in the guise of 30fps 720p capture.

It has also retained the DIGIC4 image processing, optical image stabilization and 28mm wide-angle lens of the SX200.

What has been upgraded, however, is the 3-inch 16:9 display, which now offers higher contrast and increased visibility compared to its older brother.

The PowerShot SX210 IS will be showing up in March 2010, and will cost ?360.

Canon?has?announced its new spring collection in time for what would appear to be the now almost defunct PMA show later in the month.

The new?Canon IXUS 210?will focus on bringing an array of interesting picture features and enhancements above and beyond making sure you can just point and shoot.

All controlled via a capacitive touchscreen on the back, the display was responsive and easy to zip through the menus. Icon’s are simply pressed to access things like ISO and even after a quick play we forgot that the camera lacked all the traditional buttons.?

Picture modes of worth are the “miniature” mode that is a basic tilt shift effect - making everything look like you’re shooting a model image - and a fisheye lens option that you can adjust the strength of (low, medium and high).

Of course, for those that actually just want to take pictures, you’ll get a wink mode and smile mode that means the 210 won’t take the picture until you make the right action.

Available in March, the new model will sport 14.1 megapixels, 5x ultra wide-angle zoom lens and HDMI out, all for around ?349.00.

NEWS: Motorola Devour Official Specs Announced

Moto Devour’s Flash compatibility one ups the Droid
Motorola Devour Official Specs Announced. Phones, Motorola, Android, Devour, Droid, Flash, Adobe 0

Following the announcement that the Motorola Devour Android handset featuring? MotoBLUR would be released on Verizon, official specs for the Devour have now also surfaced. The most notable surprise from the release involves Adobe Flash Lite being on board, even in the browser. There is no clarification yet on the version, but it is presumed to be 1.3.

Flash support in general though represents one feature of the Devour that the higher end Motorola Droid doesn’t have, or at least for now since Motorola did announce plans to bring Flash to the Droid sometimes in the first half of 2010.

However while mobile browser Flash compatibility may still be giving Adobe and Apple headaches with the iPhone, it’s not a first for the Android operating system. That title goes instead to the HTC Hero, which became the first Android phone to ship with Flash earlier last summer.?

Though Motorola’s Spec Sheet does not specify the Devour’s exact processor, many believe it is using the same 600MHz Qualcomm chipset found in the Palm Pixie. This is noteworthy since Palm announced it would not be adding Flash to the Pixie due to spec constraints. Subsequently Flash’s presence on the Devour ?could either imply an efficiency gain offered by Flash Lite over Palm’s WebOS’ Flash 10.1 player, or conversely hint at potential Flash performance issues on the phone should the processor speculation be true. ?

Regardless of industry rumors, the announced capability to view videos on the Devour is definitely one feature that should add to this mid range Android handset’s market appeal.?Most other specs related the phone fell in line with previous coverage. The Devour will ship with an 8GB SD card, run Android 1.6, and include a 3 mega pixel camera with digital zoom along with video capture functionality at 23 fps. ?WiFI, Bluetooth, and GPS, will round out the device’s feature set from a connectivity standpoint.?

NEWS: Are Apple’s cat calls the death knell for Flash?

“If any developer doesn ‘t support Flash, then they’re going to have trouble”
Are Apple's cat calls the death knell for Flash?

There’s much been said about the mud slinging going on in Silicon Valley between Apple and Adobe over the issue of Flash. Jobs and his iPad and iPhone aren’t particularly interested in supporting the software which he insinuated was the cause of many a Mac crash and Adobe weren ‘t too thrilled about having what was described as a “lazy” product. So, with Google also quite vocal in support of HTML over Flash exactly how is this battle going to work out?

Sitting quietly in the background and watching events unfold is a little-known company by the name of Bluestreak Technology and, as it happens, it’s the world’s second largest provider of Flash Lite products. Rather than supplying the tools to create in the same way that Adobe does, Bluestreak primarily works to create Flash clients and extensions for existing bits and pieces of hardware. Set top boxes are a speciality with the Time Warner hardware in the States using the company’s VOD and EPG designs and at least 50% of Bluestreak’s business is with mobile phones. If you’ve watched TV on an Orange phone, that wasn’t the iPhone, then it’ll have been one of Bluestreak’s players. Most promising of all, it’s Bluestreak who provides the necessary hardware accelerators in the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform popular in the top smartphones of the day.

But enough of the heavy tech. The point is that Bluestreak is quite happy working with Flash as indeed is the company also quite happy working with HTML. So, in somewhat of a win-win situation, we took the time to have a word with Bluestreak President and CEO Dominique Jodoin to see how this prize fight looks from a ringside seat.

“This is what I call the clash of the titans,” said Jodoin. “They’re both huge companies. Apple has their own technology and they don’t like to use other people’s when theirs works very well and they’ve done very well with that attitude for years. On the other hand you have Abode Flash and all of the billions of devices out there that support it are much larger in numbers.”

Larger numbers Flash may have but aren’t those dwindling with the rise of the iPhone and isn’t Adobe just pedalling on old, clunky technology that is the source of many browsing woes? Well, apparently it’s not as simple as that.

“Of course, the iPhone has been incredibly successful but the vast majority of devices out there are still feature phones that use Flash. Also, even though Google is a big proponent of HTML, they still haven’t excluded Adobe Flash in the same way. Also Flash is not usually responsible for poor performance but it is often a badly written embedded application that is responsible. If this is done badly it’ll cause problems with both Flash and HTML. HTML is moving and developing very fast but still so is Flash.”

Joboin’s reference is, of course, to the roll out of HTML 5 and the graphics and videos that you can draw directly with the code that you never could before. However, it’s still the video and, probably more crucially, the advertising we see on the internet that’s designed with Flash. The video players might be one thing but how does a website in need of ads tell a company that it doesn’t want their pre-prepared Flash displays any more? The sector hasn’t been the fastest at catching on to new ideas with traditional print still prized far higher in terms of space than a web page.

“The media has taken perhaps a little too much from the comments from Apple and Google but as big as these two are, it’s just not as simple as that. There’s definitely a movement towards HTML but the technology is one thing, actually making the shift is another. There’s a stickiness with the advertisers and companies who have built their businesses around Flash. If any developer doesn ‘t support it, then they’re going to have trouble. 10 years down the line - well, it’s a proprietary system and the world might not want it any more but we’re still going to see it in the market for many years to come.”

In the mean time, Bluestreak will continue to provide integrated solutions that support both Flash and HTML, as Adobe has done with Air, but whether or not Google, Apple or Adobe choose to cat fight this one out in the open is really of little relevance to the user and as Joboin himself put it with a smile, “Ultimately, it’s a great debate to have. It’s all about enriching our experience of the internet and media.” So, it seems for the while that it’s win-win for the consumer as well.

NEWS: VIDEO: Fallout: New Vegas teaser trailer

Available autumn 2010
VIDEO: Fallout: New Vegas teaser trailer

Bethesda has honed its previous 2010 release date for Fallout: New Vegas, which will be available for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, to a slightly more specific autumn 2010 release date.

Currently in development by Obsidian Entertainment the game is described as the “next chapter in the critically-acclaimed Fallout franchise” whilst it also “takes all the action, humor, and post-apocalyptic grime and grit of this legendary series, and raises the stakes”.

Along with the vague release date there’s also a teaser trailer above, which may or may not heighten your expectations but is all very atmospheric none the less.

NEWS: Rockstar’s winning Movember tache revealed

Canadian handlebar grower to be featured in Red Dead Redemption
Rockstar's winning Movember tache revealed

The winning tache from Rockstar Games’ Movember competition has been revealed in all its rendered glory.

Charles Leece from Canada spent the month of November cultivating an impressive version of the classic handlebar moustache and his hirsute likeness will now appear in Red Dead Redemption as an outlawed villain roaming the frontier.

Players will find a wanted poster bearing Leece’s image and as wanted posters trigger bounty hunting missions can chose to hunt him down and bring him in alive - or dead which seems a little harsh for someone who was trying to raise money for the Prostrate Cancer Charity.

Rockstar’s open world Western game, Red Dead Redemption is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 27, 2010.

NEWS: PHOTOS: Olympus PEN E-PL1 digital camera hands on

Photo gallery of the new Micro Four Thirds camera

Olympus?has launched it’s “budget”?Micro Four Thirds?camera on Wednesday and Pocket-lint was on hand (in a coffee shop) to bring you the low down on the third instalment in Olympus’ “hybrid” range.

The new model, which replaces metal for plastic, will cost ?549 in the UK but comes with a 14 to 42mm kit lens and the promise that you’ll look “Kevin Spacey” cool.

Specs include an Olympus TruePic V Image Processor, 12.3-megapixel LIVE Mos sensor, a 2.7-inch LCD and a direct video record button on the back of the camera for capturing HD film footage.

The?Olympus Pen E-PL1?gets 19 shooting modes and various arty special effects with a Live Guide to help preview the result, face detection, panorama options and an image stabiliser.

What that means in the hands is a rather large, but the equally capable camera will let you shoot in a variety of different environments without you having to mention “Single lens reflex” once.

In fact, aimed at complete newbies to the digital fold, the camera even goes that one stage further in de-mystifying common jargon like white balance, aperture, shutter speed, colour hue and saturation with easy to understand terminology and sliding graphs for the non photography geek within you.

Yes there is a retro feel to the model, but then that’s what you come to expect from Olympus and this range.?

Expected any time soon, the camera will cost ?549 in the UK or $599 in the US.

We will keep you posted on the camera’s performance once we get a production ready review unit in the office. ??

NEWS: New Motorola Devour Android phone coming to Verizon

New mid-range alternative to the Droid
New Motorola Devour Android phone coming to Verizon

Verizon has announced it will be adding Motorola’s latest Android smartphone known as the Devour to its handset line sometime this March.

Featuring a 3.1-inch, 320 by 480 capacitive touchscreen, 8GB microSD card, Bluetooth, 3.0 megapixel camera, and a slide out QWERTY keyboard, the phone is mainly noteworthy as being the first device on Verizon to use Motorola’s custom MOTOBLUR Android-powered content delivery system. ?

MOTOBLUR stands out from standard Android operating interfaces thanks largely to its home screen centric “stream” based content delivery widgets. Built to handle users ever fragmenting communication outlets,? MOTOBLUR provides the convenience of consolidating an individuals contact information and communications from email, texts, and popular social networks, all into one so called “Universal Inbox”.

Positioned as a mid range alternative to Motorola’s higher end Droid Android handset already on the Verizon network, the Devour is stated to only currently run Android 1.6.

Also, while pricing has not been released, most analysts do expect the device to sell below the Droid’s $199 US Verizon subsidize price tag.?

NEWS: Nexus One receives multi-touch and 3G fixes

Google update appeases Nexus One user’s desires
Nexus One receives multi-touch and 3G fixes. Phones, Android, Google, Nexus One, Multi-touch 0

A recent software update for the Google Nexus One adds several key features to the handset. At the top of this list is multi-touch support which has been conspicuously absent from the Android operating system previously. More specifically, the recent upgrade integrates pinch-to-zoom compatibility in the phone’s browser, photo gallery, and maps application.

Besides pinch-to-zoom compatibility, the Maps application will receive a more general upgrade to version 3.4. This change will enable users to synchronize starred favorite places between the phone or a computer, and make recalling previous searches for points of interest much easier. A new “Night mode” in Google Maps Navigation will also automatically adjust user’s screens at night for better map viewing and driving.?

In response to persistent complaints of 3G issues with the handset, Google has pushed 3G connectivity improvements for “some Nexus One phones” as well and enabled their latest pet project Google Goggles to be used via the phone’s Apps menu. Through this addition, Google stated on its blog that it hopes to encourage users to “just use your Nexus One camera to start searching the web.”

When exactly all of these updates will hit individual phones is still somewhat uncertain, but Google does expect to have the changes rolled out to a majority of users by the end of the week.?

NEWS: Facebook labelled biggest corporate security risk

Due to malware, spam and phishing risks
Facebook labelled biggest corporate security risk. Software, Websites, Facebook, Security 0

Sophos has published new research that indicates that corporate IT departments view Facebook as by far the biggest security risk for businesses, which might explain why so many ban usage of the social networking site.

Among 500 firms that were polled, 60% thought that Facebook was the biggest danger, compared to 18% for MySpace, 17% for Twitter, and 4% for LinkedIn. It’s not clear where the extra 1% has gone - Friendster, perhaps? The reason for the danger is the plethora of malware, spam and phishing risks on the network. On top of that, Facebook is the biggest social network out there - ten times larger than Twitter with a massive 350 million users.

Sophos’ Graham Cluely said: “Facebook is by far the largest social network - and you’ll find more bad apples in the biggest orchard. The truth is that the security team at Facebook works hard to counter threats on their site - it’s just that policing 350 million users can’t be an easy job for anyone. But there is no doubt that simple changes could make Facebook users safer”.

In Sophos’ report, the company added: “Social networking sites are now a vital part of many marketing and sales strategies. Therefore, they cannot be blocked—but they cannot be allowed to drain company resources or used as vectors for data loss or malware penetration. A unified approach providing sensible, granular access control, secure encryption and data monitoring, and comprehensive malware protection is mandatory for businesses to operate flexibly in the modern socially networked world”.
