Samsung Galaxy Tab vs Toshiba Folio 100

Android tablet royal rumble
Samsung Galaxy Tab vs Toshiba Folio 100

As predicted, it’s tablet city at IFA2010. Samsung swung in with the Android running Samsung Galaxy Tab and that was one thing for the iPad to think about. Now, with Toshiba launching the Toshiba Folio 100, well, there’s some decisions tablet PC buyers out there are going to be have to be making and making soon.

It’s easy enough if you’re an Apple fanboy. You just pick the one with the OS to match the rest of your gear. However, given that both the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Toshiba Folio 100 both sport Google’s open mobile OS, which should the Android-ites be going for? The answer lies within these words…

Form

Winner: SamTab
91 x 120 x 12mm, 380g

Loser: Folio
281 x 181 x 14mm, 760g

You’re not exactly going to be fitting either of these tablets in your pocket. So, to some degree, the dimensions are a bit of a red herring. That said, it’s worth knowing that the SamTab is thinner and will feel a lot less weighty both in your hand an in your travel bag. While you get the bonus of a bigger screen on the Folio as a counterpoint, all the same, it is a little on the chunky side.

Display

Winner: SamTab
7in, 1024 x 600, multitouch

Loser: Folio
10.1in, 1024 x 600, multitouch

Even though the Folio has a bigger screen, it’s well worth nothing that it has exactly the same resolution but spread over a large area. In short, the pixel density is far better on the SamTab and you’re going to see much crisper pictures. Of course, the payback is that you might want to hold Samsung’s device a little closer to your eyes to get that same big screen effect as you do on the Toshiba Folio 100. The trouble is that you don’t get that choice to make the pixels denser with the Toshiba.

Engine Room

Winner: Folio
Nvidia Tegra 2

Loser: SamTab
Samsung Hummingbird

Both tablets run with the ever popular system on a chip solutions at their core and what the Hummingbird offers is almost identical to the iPad with an ARM Cortex A8 1.0GHz CPU and PowerVR SGX540 GPU combo. Toshiba has the edge though even over what is already an impressive engine on the SamTab. There’s a dual Core 1GHz ARM 9 offering heavy mobile power as well as solid multi-operational processing plus there’s some hardcore Nvidia GPU action going on in there as well. For smoother video playback and better games performance, it has to be the Folio by a mile.

Software

Tie: SamTab
Android 2.2 (Froyo) + TouchWiz

Tie: Folio
Android 2.2 (Froyo)

Horses for courses in this department. Both devices are as up to date with Android as you can get right now and will happily cope with Android 3.0 and better as soon as they arrive. The only major difference is that the SamTab comes with Samsung’s TouchWiz custom UI on top. Now, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all if Toshiba didn’t come out with some Brandroid of its own. If that did happen, one would expect it to be a less accomplished work than TouchWiz - simply because Toshiba has had less practice at it. However, for the time being, we’ll consider this one a draw.

NB: Both of these devices are marketed as coming with all sorts of bits of software such as Fring, Swype, Evernote and others already installed. Do remember that 99 per cent of these you can go and get yourself on the Android Market. That said, the Folio is stated to come with Documents to Go which is a paid for app, if the full version.

Imaging

Winner: SamTab
1.3MP front facing, 3MP rear facing

Loser: Folio
1.3MP front facing

Both manufacturers have added the all important webcam, clearly recognising that video calling is one of the killer apps of this gadget form. However, it’s only Samsung that has adorned its creation with a 3-megapixel camera plus LED flash to play with on the other side. You might not be buying a tablet to be able to shoot snaps or capture video but it’s one of those things you’ll get annoyed with when start looking to download augmented reality apps.

Storage

Winner: SamTab
16/32GB + SD

Loser: Folio
16GB + SD

Neither of these devices offer as much storage on board as the iPad but, with an upper end model available from Samsung, there’s a lot more room to keep all your HD videos, photos and whatever else one keeps on a tablet these days. Neither are terrible here given that you can buy big, fat SD cards in this day and age.

Price

SamTab
TBC

Folio
?329

For the minute, there’s no 3G version of the Folio but we know that the Wi-Fi only will cost ?329 when it arrives in October. Whether the mobile broadband edition is more or less costly than the SamTab remains to be seen. Keep ‘em peeled on Pocket-lint and we’ll let you know as soon as the decision’s been made.

Battery

Winner: SamTab
7 hours video

Loser: Folio
Less

Toshiba’s power stats for the Folio are perfectly respectable. The headline is that you’ll get 7 hours of play but only when split something like 65 per cent web browsing, 10 per cent video and 25 per cent standby. Whether it’s having to power a larger screen or not, that achievement has rather been blown out the water by Samsung who claim you can watch video for 7 hours straight on the Galaxy Tab. Significant when you’re talking about entertaining yourself on a long haul flight.

Connectivity

Tie: SamTab
Wi/3G/BT3.0/HDMI/DLNA

Tie: Folio
Wi/3G/BT2.1/HDMI/DLNA/USB

Althouth there are differences, we’re not going to be petty enough here to say that one device comes out over the other. The Galaxy Tab has Bluetooth 3.0 as well as the n-Wi-Fi, 3G and DLNA credentials but there’s no USB port. Everything has to be done either by the 30-pin dock or removable SD cards.

On the other hand, strictly speaking there’s isn’t actually a 3G version of the Folio available just now but it does have USB 2.0 which might save a little bother when connecting peripheral devices.

Conclusions

The Toshiba Folio has only picked up one winner’s medal in the this match up but that doesn’t make it a bad device. It’s answered some very big questions with some very big answers and, on spec, anyone buying one is unlikely to be disappointed. If Tosh has tuned everything nicely - think a decent touchscreen interface - then you’ll get some seriously impressive grunt out of this larger tablet and that might pay dividends for those looking to run some more serious games.

All the same, we’re going with the Samsung Galaxy Tab as the better of the two. It’s a good size with a great screen, astounding battery life, plenty of guts, two cameras, just about all the connectivity you could ask for and it also happens to be a phone. Eat that, iPad.

Google pay-per-view service in works

Could beef up Google TV offering
Google pay-per-view service in works. Home Cinema, PVRs, Google TV, Google, Sony 0

Google could be about to enter the pay-per-view market via YouTube according to reports in the FT.

The newspaper says Google, who could go live with the service as early as before the end of the year, is already in negotiations with Hollywood’s leading movie studios.

“Google has been pitching to the studios on the international appeal of a streaming, on-demand movie service pegged to the world’s most popular search engine and YouTube, according to several people with knowledge of the situation,” reports the FT.

“Google and YouTube are a global phenomenon with a hell of a lot of eyeballs – more than any cable or satellite service,” said one executive with knowledge of the plans. “They’ve talked about how many people they could steer to this . . . it’s a huge number.”

However what’s more likely, is that the company will use the service to help bolster the appeal of its?Google TV?offering launching soon and use it to take on Apple’s Apple TV offering, Hulu and Netflix as the pay-per-view market intensifies.

Sony?has already announced, as part of its partnership deal with Google, that it will have its first internet TV out in time for Christmas in the US. According to the company, Sony will be the world’s first TV to incorporate the “Google TV” platform later this year.

Through an?easy-to-use?interface, consumers will be able to search and access content from their TVs and across the Internet - a rich internet experience on consumers’ TVs says the company.

“Sony Internet TV” is scheduled to first launch in the US the autumn of 2010 with the lineup featuring both a standalone TV model and set top box-type unit incorporating a Blu-ray disc drive.

In the UK Sony already offers Lovefilm via its BRAVIA televisions.

HP’s CTO Phil McKinney teases with gadgets of tomorrow…

Then promptly Photoshops them out
HP's CTO Phil McKinney teases with gadgets of tomorrow.... Tablets, Phones, Gadgets, HP, Futureweek, 0

HP?CTO’s?Phil McKinney?has been teasing his twitter followers with two images that show him supposedly playing with a couple of new gadgets from HP’s research lab.

We say supposedly, because as the pictures show, all we are getting to see right now is him holding a Photoshopped black rectangle in the two shots, one the size of a phone, the other the size of a tablet. A third black Photoshopped rectangle is around his wrist.

The images come of the back of McKinney’s call for votes to let him do a panel at SXSW 2011.

The CTO is hoping to do a panel titled Hacking the Future where he looks at what the future will be like it 5 to 10 years (Something Pocket-lint did back in February with its?Future week?that looked at the technology of 2015).

While the gadgets that he is holding could be real, chances are if they are to appear in his talk we might not see them until 2015.

It’s also worth noting that in the past McKinney has shown off bendable e-ink technology, a dual display tablet and several cognitive devices that “learn” what you do by being behaviour aware none of which have become commercially available yet.

Best Windows Phone 7 apps and games in development

What to look forward to when Microsoft’s new phone OS launches
Best Windows Phone 7 apps and games in development. Phones, Mobile phone apps, Features, Microsoft, Shazam, Windows Phone 7, Windows phone 7 apps, Windows phone 7 games, flickr, Foursquare, Seesmic, 0

Windows Phone 7 isn’t out yet, however that doesn’t mean developers can’t start getting to work on the apps that will popular the Windows Phone 7 App store from day one.

Here we showcase what we think are the best Windows Phone 7 apps we’ve seen in development so far.

It’s worth pointing out that we know this isn’t a definitive list, nor does it cover all all the apps in development, but it’s a good start, and, if they all make the grade and are ready on day one, Microsoft should have plenty to shout about.

Even better it means that if you are going to embrace Windows Phone 7 on day one, you’ll have plenty of apps to keep you busy and entertained.

Seesmic for Windows Phone 7

This will bring the Seesmic experience on Windows Phone 7 and lets you bring in your Twitter, Facebook, and the thousand other social networks into one application.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

You’ll be able to do all the usual things, plus it will work seamlessly with the Windows 7 and Mac versions of the software. Where it takes things one step further is full integration of other services in the phone like Bing maps.

Twozaic for Windows Phone 7

There isn’t an integrated Twitter support in Windows Phone 7 from day one, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be Twitter apps to tweet from. If Seesmic isn’t your cup of tea, one alternative will be Twozaic that offers a more simplified Twitter experience judging from the demo pictures.?

The most interesting element to the app will be the “Cloud view” that shows 20 tweets in a?mosaic?layout, with 3 levels of importance, currently based on the number of followers and favorites.

Foursquare on Windows Phone 7

There might be plenty of talk about Facebook Places, but Foursquare is still popular, and still getting plenty of check-ins.? Come Windows Phone 7 launch day you’ll be able to check-in via your Windows Phone 7 phone thanks to the Foursquare Windows Phone 7 app.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

It will come with Bing maps integration, all the usual Foursquare features and make checking-in something pretty easy to do. You’ll even get directions to how to find your friends nearby.

Graphic.ly for Windows Phone 7

How much do you like comic books? If it’s a lot then this is going to be the app that you’ll want to look out for come launch day.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

Graphic.ly lets you carry your favourite comics, buy comics and of course read comics on your new phone.? The interface is all very Windows Phone 7, but also very comic book friendly allowing you to select your comic, and touch to read swiping through the pages.

You’ll be able to deep zoom into the images, and even comment on individual images to share with other Graphic.ly friends.

Netflix for Windows Phone 7

One for our American friends, but Netflix will let you stream movies and television shows over the air directly to your Windows Phone 7 handset to watch as long as you’ve got Wi-Fi access.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

If you’re a member, that means never having nothing to watch on the go. That’s pretty impressive.

Shazam?for Windows Phone 7

We know you like a good music track and much as the rest of us, and have no doubt seen Shazam working on an iPhone, BlackBerry or Android device.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

Thankfully Shazam is in development for Windows Phone 7 meaning if you switch to the new Microsoft mobile OS you’ll still be able to find out what that track is in the background.

Flickr Uploader?for Windows Phone 7

judging by most of the leaked hardware doing the rounds on the internet at the moment all the launch phones are going to come with a 8 megapixel cameras. That means plenty of potential when it comes to snapping shots on the go. But what do you do when it comes to sharing those images.

One Windows Phone 7 app in development is the Flickr Uploader that will let you upload images directly to Flickr to share with your friends.

It’s simple, but it will let you share that picture of the weird dude sitting opposite you in the restaurant wearing a tea cosy on his head.

USGA Golf?for Windows Phone 7

Do you play golf? Thought you did. Then you’ll probably want to get the USGA golf app for Windows Phone 7 if it makes it to the App store.

Created by Microsoft’s Jeff Arnold, Lead motion designer for Windows Phone 7, the app shows what is possible for golfers who’ve got a Windows Phone 7 phone. The app lists virtually all the golf courses of America and then based on that choice will give you all the details of the course you are about to play.

This isn’t a game mind you, but an aid to the course you are about to play in real life.

The app tracks players you’ve played against in the past, let you step up new players and basically track all your shots, how you did, what your scorecard looks like out on the course using the phone, data in the app, and your GPS location on the course. It will be time to ditch the pencil.

TouchCall?for Windows Phone 7

An incredibly simple app that will let you create shortcuts to six phone numbers on a single screen allowing you to touch the relating button to phone them

TouchCall app for Windows Phone 7 from Guillaume Andre on Vimeo.

If it sounds simple, that’s because it is, but who said apps had to be confusing.

Halo Waypoint?for Windows Phone 7

There are over 63 games available for Windows Phone 7 and the Halo Waypoint Windows Phone 7 app will act as a hub for all things Halo on your phone on the go.

Get Microsoft Silverlight

According to Microsoft Halo fans will want it because you’ll be able to get videos, comics, news, and plenty of other stuff on your phone on the go.

Crackdown 2?for Windows Phone 7

Set in the world of Crackdown 2, you’ve got to fight off zombies using a towers to defend your pile.

The interesting thing here is that you can use Bing maps to actually defend certain places in particular like your house, your office, or your favourite pub.

Wall street?for Windows Phone 7

This look like one for the Gordon Gekko fans of this world bring you all the stock market data that you could want using the Yahoo’s Stock tracker service.

The app will let you drill down to get more information, graphs and company news while also giving you an overview on the world’s biggest markets while your at the country club sipping a gin and tonic.

Marathon?for Windows Phone 7

If you’re training for a marathon or just like running this is going to be an app to put on your want list. Using the GPS on board in the camera, it will help track your run so you can keep an eye on your training.

The software lets you set goals, will map your course and give you announcements to whether you are ahead or behind your target time. You’ll even be able to run against yourself thanks to a ghost mode.

Paul Allen sues Google, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo, YouTube and more

Could change the way the internet looks if successful
Paul Allen sues Google, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo, YouTube and more. Online, Google, Apple, Yahoo, Facebook, YouTube, Paul Allen, Microsoft, Amazon, Patents, lawsuits 0

Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, and not the character from American Psycho, is suing Apple, Google, AOL,?eBay, Facebook,?Netflix,?Office Depot,?OfficeMax,?Staples,?Yahoo and YouTube citing that the online sites are all breaking patents owned by his company.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Allen is “aggressively going after companies, including many of Silicon Valley’s biggest names, that he thinks are violating technology that was developed at his Interval Research Corp., a Palo Alto, Calif., lab and technology incubator he financed with about $100 million during the Internet bubble.”

The technology behind the patents mainly refer to websites giving customers or readers suggestions of other related articles on the same page, very much like the features that are found on most websites across the Internet.

“The technology behind one patent allows a site to offer suggestions to consumers for items related to what they’re currently viewing, or related to online activities of others in the case of social networking sites,” reports the US paper. “A second, among other things, allow readers of a news story to quickly locate stories related to a particular subject. Two others enable ads, stock quotes, news updates or video images to flash on a computer screen, peripherally to a user’s main activity.”

Not surprisingly Allen isn’t going after Microsoft or Amazon, both companies that he owns shares in.

If successful, it could spell a completely change to how the internet looks and make Allen, who is already worth some $13 billion even richer.

We will keep you posted.

BBC iPlayer going global

American’s get ready for Doctor Who, Masterchef and more
BBC iPlayer going global. Home Cinema, Online, BBC, BBC iPlayer, 0

The BBC’s Mark Thompson has said that the BBC aims to launch an international commercial version of the iPlayer within the year.

“Within a year we aim to launch an international commercial version of the iPlayer,” said the BBC director general at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.

Thompson then followed up those comments with further news in his keynote speech that:

“We also want to find a way of letting UK licence fee payers and servicemen and women use the UK iPlayer wherever they are in the world.”

Currently the BBC iPlayer is only available to UK residents in the UK with visitors outside the UK Internet world barred from accessing the service.

Thompson held back however from detailing how the service would work, or whether it would it would be a chargeable offering outside of the UK.

We will keep you posted.

FIFA 11 - quick play preview

EA’s effort gets its annual update
FIFA 11 - quick play preview. gaming, FIFA 11, gamescom, Xbox 360 0

It’s the debate that won’t seem to go away. FIFA or Pro Evo? EA or Konami? Every year the rivalry intensifies and even here at Pocket-lint Towers we have argued long into the night as to what is the king of the footie sim?

And, as the 2011 versions of both titles were on show over at Gamescom, we thought it was only right to take them both for a spin and see how they faired. Now let’s have a look at EA’s effort

Name

FIFA 2011

What platform is it on?

Xbox 360 (also available on Wii, DS, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PSP and PC)

When’s it due out?

1 October 2010

What other game is it like?

FIFA 08, FIFA 09, FIFA 10.

Does it use any new tech?

No.

The pitch

FIFA 11 delivers a true football experience with authentic club and leagues licenses and gameplay refinements and innovations that combine to create the complete football simulation.

The storyline

This is the 18th title of EA’s franchise, dating all the way back from 1993 (the original had David Platt on the cover). It’s the most detailed football sim in the market and has built up a bit of a purists fanbase in the last few year - stealing a few over from its main rival Konami. The new game updates all the regular features as well as adding a play as the goalkeeper mode.

Video

Our first impressions

Okay, first up a confession.

This quick-play is being written by a self confessed PES addict, who has been outspoken in the past regarding EA’s FIFA franchise.

But, the opinions expressed here are honest, and without bias and any criticism is warranted.

The thing is, you won’t find much criticism here - the gameplay impressed us greatly (even if we were unable to switch to the classic PES-style control set up).

FIFA has definitely lost its, shall we say, ridiculous nature, whereby you can score spectacular overhead kicks and goals from the halfway line, and the gameplay is vastly improved because of this.

We’ve played plenty of FIFA 10 and found it to be a massive improvement on past efforts and FIFA 11 takes this one step further. It felt fluid, it felt slick and it felt, well it felt a bit like PES.

The passing, like we found with PES 2011, felt greatly improved - possibly due to the new pro-passing feature.

The match we were involved in went to penalties (where we faced a German, so no chance of winning) but neither we, nor our opponent could get the hang of the new penalty set up. The controls felt far too sensitive and most penalties flew high over the bar.

The strong point of FIFA has always been its attention to detail and FIFA 11 does the franchise proud. It looks simply stunning and the individual specifics of each player is incredible.

It’s too early to properly compare FIFA 11 and PES 11, but judging by this early showing, EA’s effort has gone a long way to convincing a PES addict that it is a very strong title.

Please note

Gamescom is a fantastic chance to see the latest games due out over the coming year, letting us get a glimpse into what are going to be the big titles and the ones to avoid like the plague.

The big problem however, is that for most of the titles that glimpse is, well, just that. At the show you’ll get to play a level here or a multiplayer map there.

So with that in mind we present you with our Quick Play.

What we’ve done is broken down the key facts you need to know and then given you our first impressions based on around 15 minutes of gaming. For us that 15 minutes isn’t enough to do a First Look review. How can you rate a game that offers over 30 hours of gaming on just 15 minutes of play? However, it should hopefully give you an idea, a feeling, a notion, of what to expect come launch day.

What’s new in Digg 4?

We run you through the updated features
What's new in Digg 4?

Digg has finally launched the much anticipated new version of its website - known as Digg 4. Although a beta version has been available to a small number of users for a while, only now has the full website been unleashed on the public. So, what can we expect from Digg 4?

What is Digg?

First launched in December 2004, Digg is a social new website that relies entirely on user-generated content and enables readers to vote stories up or down. This is known as ‘digging’ or ‘burying’ stories, with only the most ‘dugg’ stories from those submitted each day, appearing on the front page. The website has been subject to constant tweaks and improvements, with apps for both iPhone and Android being launched earlier in 2010.

What’s new?

The main change with version 4.0 is the integration with the major social networking sites, along with a spiffy redesign, that’s not too dissimilar to Twitter. The new version enables you to find friends through your existing Facebook, Twitter and Google accounts. Along with this, relatively major change in feel, Digg has introduced a brand new feature called My News.

My News

If you’re joining the site for the first time, you’ll be offered a list of suggested followers. Once you’ve browsed the directory and chosen who to follow, you’ll land on My News, which is the new default homepage for Digg story submissions, diggs and comments of the people you’re following, in real time. Within each story you’ll be able to see any of your friends that dugg it and any comments that they may have left. You can also choose to view either the most recent stories or the top stories from the past 24 hours and, on the right hand side of the My News page, there’s even the top stories from the last 24 hours as according to the people in your social circle. Of course, if you don’t want My News as your homepage, you can simply switch back to the old-style Top News, which will show you the hottest stories from around the globe.

Another major improvement is that it’s now much easier to submit stories to Digg, simply by pasting the URL into the ‘Digg it’ box that appears at the top of every page. If it hasn’t already been submitted you’ll be required to pen a quick description, and then you can sit back and relax.

Lastly, the boffins at Digg have also corrected a niggling annoyance from the old system in that when you click on the news stories on the homepage, you’re now taken instantly to the original article, rather than through to the Digg page for that story first. What’s more, it’s now also easier to manage your profile with the Settings link offering up a clear summary of your profile.

Is it any good?

On its launch, the new version seems to have been plagued by a few gremlins in the system, leading to an inevitable backlash from disgruntled Digg fans. It seems that the site was having trouble coping with the vast amount of traffic, coupled with all the changes, with Digg’s official Twitter feed stating:

“Hey all - hold steady. Thanks for all your interest in the new Digg. We’re adding more capacity (bring it!)”.

Certainly, when we tried it here at Pocket-lint, we were greeted with Digg’s version of the Twitter Fail Whale, instead featuring an ox trying to drag a trailer with a broken axel.

As well as that, a vast number of die-hard Diggers are seemingly outraged at the changes, particularly the social media aspects, and have vowed never to use the site again. So, it seems that the big cheeses at Digg have put all their eggs in one friend-shaped basket by assuming that everyone that uses their site belongs to, or indeed wants to belong to, at least one social network. Having said that, for the massive amount of people that so use such sites, it seems to be a very canny move, particularly when you look at the way that Twitter has become a mine of information, thanks to all the news stories that are being tweeted and retweeted. Whether it works as well for Digg remains to be seen.
